Room to Improve

Pike Research recently released a report on the state of energy efficient lighting for commercial markets.  Their findings?  Fluorescent and LED technologies will make up over three-quarters of the United States lighting market by 2020.

That’s great news, considering the other part of the report:

The U.S. is currently responsible for 20% of the total electricity consumption used for lighting in the entire world.  If you don’t think that sounds substantial, remember that the U.S. only makes up about 4.5% of the world’s total population.

Commercial and public buildings make up the largest share of that consumption, followed by residential lighting, industrial lighting, and outdoor lighting.  Pike Research estimated the cost of consumption in the U.S. is about $40 billion.
