Construction Professionals: A New Tool for Saving

The Department of Energy just released a new free tool called Commercial Lighting Solutions for Office.  It provides customizable lighting and control templates online to help building owners figure out how to save 30% in lighting energy (in comparison to buildings already complying with ASHRAE 90.1-2004).

This tool will be a lifesaver for those owning or building new nonresidential buildings, because they are required to exceed ASHRAE 90.1-2004 by 30% according to the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

So how does it work?  Once you register as a user, you can start a New Design Project and provide some details about your building: the type, location, operating hours, ceiling heights, amount of daylight, prevailing energy code, etc.  Given this information, the webtool provides several lighting options and control options to achieve the savings.  The user can select one of the designs and then view their total energy savings with specific implementation instructions.

The tool was designed to help building owners achieve higher energy-efficiency without sacrificing quality of lighting.  For more information, check out the article by the Lighting Controls Association, who helped develop the control options.
