PinExt Choosing Energy Saving Under Cabinet Lights

Kitchen renovation in the works? When updating your kitchen with energy-efficiency in mind, be sure to look to the lights. Efficient under cabinet or under counter lights are extremely effective at cutting down your energy use, without sacrificing style or quality.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite under cabinet lights, what makes them energy-efficient, and what makes them great for the kitchen:

LEDs

1. LED Thin Under Cabinet Task Lights

These classic ENERGY STAR qualified LED lights can produce nearly 36 lumens of light for every watt of energy they use, depending on the length of the fixture. They also have a rated-life of up to 50,000 hours, so you know they’re reliable. These lights will fit in with the decor of almost any kitchen, producing bright white light, and available in 2 different finishes. See them here. Continue reading »

PinExt Use Bookshelf Lights to Help Tell Your Story

bookcase lights 220x300 Use Bookshelf Lights to Help Tell Your StoryWhether they shelve books, artwork, or heirlooms, bookcases are a great way to feature your unique interests. However, it can be easy to let your special things fall into the shadows if they’re not properly lit. Here are a few different ways to spotlight your most precious items:

Strips and Microfluorescents

If you prefer to highlight your entire bookshelf, running a Xenon Low Voltage Light Strip or a microfluorescent light fixture along each shelf will do the trick. Just make sure you install the lights in a place they can’t be seen—that way they’ll draw attention to what is important and really make your display pop. As an added bonus, they’ll also provide a significant light source to the entire room.

Puck Lights and Recessed Lights

Do you have a favorite painting, sculpture, or photograph sitting on your bookcase? Feature it with a small puck light attached to the shelf above. This finishing touch draws attention to the item and adds diverse visual interest to the entire bookshelf. If your bookcases are freestanding and have curiosities on top, you can use recessed lighting to attract the eye above. Installing recessed lights is also an easy way to emphasize a bookshelf without illuminating the whole room, although this option will highlight the shelf more than its contents.

PinExt Your Infographic For Deciding On A Light Source

We’ve been in business since 1993, so we’ve heard just about every question in the book when it comes to light sources. “How much longer does an LED light last than a fluorescent, on average?” “Which light sources are dimmable?” “What exactly is xenon lighting?”

We created this infographic to address those questions and more – all of the FAQ’s that we hear related to choosing a light source. You’ll find an overview of how each one works, a color temperature comparison scale, pros & cons, estimated lifetime, and a few more general tips. Let us know what you think!

PinExt 3 Recreatable Lighting Looks From Houzz
If you haven’t checked out Houzz.com, you’re in for a treat. Houzz is a home design site with hundreds of thousands of interior and exterior photos, thousands of articles written by design experts, and several tools for managing the remodeling process. I am opted in to Houzz’s weekly newsletter, which delivers inspiration via ideabooks that will make you swoon.

Our product pages at Pegasus Lighting are easy to navigate, but they don’t always include tons of application photos. I find that sifting through Houzz’s ideabooks can spark new design ideas in an instant! Here are three photos from Houzz.com that are easily recreatable with Pegasus Lighting’s products.

1. The Multi-Layered Dining Room:

Isn’t it beautiful? This look is achieved by using four layers of lighting (five if you count the fireplace)! The cove lighting on the ceiling is done in a warm white color temperature. The designer likely used a customized lighting strip, probably something very similar to our xenon low voltage light strip. The four mini recessed lights add just a touch of general lighting – and the two in the center are swiveled to also illuminate the wall art. The in-cabinet lights call attention to the glass cabinets, and with the cove lighting, create excellent accent lighting for the room. Finally, the under cabinet lights provide countertop lighting in a warm color temperature, likely with a xenon under cabinet light fixture. Continue reading »

PinExt Real DIY Lighting Projects: Adding a Basement Kitchen

These photos come from a serious DIY-er, so perhaps they’ll be an inspiration for anyone considering tackling a major renovation project on your own. Chad decided to build a kitchen in his basement, so he picked out cabinets and hardware and then installed all of the electrical, plumbing, and flooring with the help of his wife. He hired someone to help with the countertops and drywall work. “Some things should just be left to the pros,” Chad said. We agree!

PinExt Real Lighting Projects: A Kitchen Transformation

Get ready for some unbelievable before and after pictures.

Today’s post features a kitchen remodeling project from Rob’s Remodeling, Inc. After talking with Rob on the phone, I wished I lived closer to Northbrook, IL (where Rob’s Remodeling, Inc. is based) so I could hire him for any future remodeling projects I might have. He’s the nicest guy, and he’s clearly passionate about doing quality work. “I don’t do this for the money,” he told me. “I just love what I do.”

Rob says he uses Pegasus Lighting products whenever he can. His favorite under cabinet lighting fixture is the Xenon Triangle Light, and he is a perfectionist about making sure clients cannot see any wires once they’re installed. Best of all, he’s as big of a fan of under cabinet lighting as we are: “When I talk someone into doing under cabinet lighting,” he said, “it’s the difference between a good kitchen and a kickass kitchen.”

Without further ado, here are the pictures of a recent kitchen remodeling project Rob completed for a client. Continue reading »

PinExt You Asked For It ... New Product Spotlight Videos

Have you ever shopped for a (lighting) product online and thought, “I wish I could see it a little more closely,” or “Why doesn’t this picture show the mounting equipment/light bulbs/power switch/fill in the blank…

So have we.

Light Reading is more than just a cool place to read about lighting news, trends, and tips (or at least, we like to think so).

It’s an extension of Pegasus Lighting’s corporate mission to provide a positive learning experience in lighting – and part of that includes creating an easy and informative shopping experience on our main website.

About a month ago, we asked our Facebook fans if it would be helpful to start shooting videos of our products for the website. That way, even if a product has ten photos, you can watch a video accompaniment to see every single angle and feature of the light fixture. After hearing positive feedback, we have launched our first three “Product Spotlight” videos. Continue reading »

PinExt As Seen on TV: Our Xenon Light Strip

Have you ever seen a cove lighting installation in action?  Our xenon low voltage strip was featured on the DIY network TV show Rescue Renovation!  The episode features a young man who bought his first home from 1000 miles away.  Needless to say, it turned out to be quite a “fixer-upper.”

In this clip, you’ll see the Rescue Renovation team coming in to help.  They use the light strip behind crown molding to accentuate the home’s original cove ceiling.  View the video after the jump! Continue reading »
