foyer How To Light a FoyerIf you have an elegant staircase, entrance hallway, or foyer that’s begging for lighting to call attention to its splendor, look no further. This guide will help you determine exactly what types of light fixtures will fill the space best.

You almost always want to incorporate some sort of chandelier if the foyer’s ceiling is above-average height. It will create that “wow” effect you are looking for. However, it’s important to scale  the size of the light fixture for the space. Here are some tips that should help…

To determine the right width of the light fixture: Add the length and width dimensions (in feet) of the foyer area together. That number – in inches – is the width of the light fixture you should look for. So, if your foyer is ten feet by ten feet, you’ll want a light fixture that is about 20 inches wide.

To determine the right height of the light fixture: Position the light fixture so that the bottom is at least seven feet from the floor. If you have a window above your front door in the foyer, you can really heighten the effect of a beautiful chandelier. Center the chandelier in the window. Even from the outside, your home will look brilliant!

Depending on how large your foyer is, you may want to look for a flush mount ceiling light, a semi-flush mount light, or a chandelier with two or three tiers.

Very large entryways might call for wall sconces in addition to a ceiling light fixture. Hang them about 66 inches from the floor and place them about eight feet apart.

Sold How to Make Your Home Seller Ready1. De-personalize

You want buyers to be able to picture themselves in their home, and that’s not going to happen if your family photos are prominently displayed in the living room.  Remove any personal items or unusual decorations.  It’s impossible to predict a potential buyer’s taste, so try to make your home neutral, yet inviting.

2. Create open space

Buyers don’t need to see every single room in the house filled with furniture.  Rent a storage space and reevaluate what you’re showing.  It’s best to leave a few functional pieces in each room and leave the rest for potential buyers to imagine.  Remove bookshelves, unnecessary chairs/couches, extra leaves in your dining room table, and out-of-season clothing in your closet.  Your home will seem larger and will be more likely to attract buyers. IKEA & the End of the Incandescent Light Bulb

One of IKEA's LED table lamps currently on their website. What do you think about this style, compared to a traditional table lamp with an incandescent bulb?

In our Roundup for June 14 to July 2, we noted IKEA’s impending phaseout on the sale of incandescent light bulbs.  We didn’t go into detail about what this means for the lighting industry, and it’s a pretty significant milestone.

With such a prominent retailer officially disassociating themselves from incandescent bulbs (IKEA’s phaseout is expected to begin in August and be complete by the end of the year), the shift across the industry from traditional bulbs to more energy efficient lighting accelerates.

Of course, these changes will take place across the entire lighting industry in the next few years anyway – IKEA is simply beginning the incandescent phaseout early.  In 2012, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will take effect.  There are various components of the law (see the link for more details).  Basically, by 2014, the sale of all traditional incandescent bulbs will be banned.

The phaseout also signifies changes ahead in lighting design.  CFLs, Halogens, and LEDs will take the place of incandescent bulbs, and that means new lighting designs corresponding with the more energy efficient light sources are to be expected.  The picture of the table lamp above illustrates this point: without incandescents, it will no longer be necessary to accommodate for a large incandescent bulb in the design of a lighting fixture.

The entire foundation of lighting design is going to change; and for lighting designers, the possibilities are endless.

2.  Find out what your current circuit in the kitchen can handle.  In order to do this, multiply the amps by the volts.  Most circuits have 120 volts.  So if your circuit was 15 amps, you’d multiply 15×120.  That amounts to 1800 – the total number of watts your kitchen circuit can handle.  It’s a good rule of thumb to use your circuit up to 80 percent of its capacity.

3.  Consider the condition of your current wiring.  If you’re in an older home, you might consider rewiring the room (this is where you should contact an electrician if you don’t have experience).

Picture%201 The Pegasus Lighting Roundup for Mar 15 to Mar 26

In lighting news…

With Earth Day approaching in less than a month, this Department of Energy report could not have been more timely.  Here is the startling statistic: widespread adoption to LED lighting among Americans would save $120 billion.  It would also eliminate the need for 24 new large power plants, and would decrease carbon emissions significantly.

LEDs are also expected to come down in price significantly, so making that change to collectively save $120 billion will not have such high up-front costs.  Prices may drop from $30 to $10-20 because the production cost is expected to decrease.

Toshiba halted production of incandescent light bulbs on 3/17, marking a remarkable shift for the company to more energy-efficient products.  Toshiba will now focus on producing LEDs.

The Importance of Bathroom LightingIt’s a small room with a big impact.  For homes, the main-floor half-bath, or powder room, is often one of the highest-traffic spaces in the house.  For businesses (especially restaurants), the bathroom can determine customer satisfaction, serving as the tipping point between a customer who won’t return and a customer who will recommend to others.  Businesses that consider bathroom design to be an expendable overhead cost may be making an expensive mistake.  A recent study by Cintas Corp. found that 95% of customers would not return to a restaurant if they had a bad experience with the restroom.  The study found that customers use these types of small details as indicators of how the business handles other back-end operations.

That being said, the guest bathroom for homes or businesses is a valuable space to remodel.  Because it’s so small, it’s also a less expensive project to take on.

In lighting news…

The remodeling business is expected to grow this year, ending the economic slump caused by the housing downturn.  Industry experts at the International Builders’ Show remarked that the increase in existing-home sales due to low prices will help the remodeling market.  Other contributors to the boost:   aging baby boomers are beginning to adapt homes to their needs.  Also, there’s a clearly rising trend to incorporate green initiatives in homes.

OLEDs are expected to be the next big thing on the market for display lighting of any kind (computer monitors, TVs, cell phone displays, etc).  Why are they so great?  They’re extremely energy efficient, can be made unbelievably thin, and provide superior color quality.  This article explains why they’re not on the market yet: their efficiency technology is still developing, the cost of creating them is sky-high, and their lifespan is lacking.  However, five years from now, we may see OLEDs making things like glowing wallpaper possible.
