PinExt 5 Light Hacks from LifeHacker.com

If you don’t know about LifeHacker.com, it’s a website about shortcuts to make your life easier. The site offers tons of articles about smart and handy tips and tricks for getting things done and solving annoying, everyday problems.

Below are just a few ideas from LifeHacker about lighting. Some are “hacks” about creating simple-yet-innovative light fixtures, and others use light to avoid common problems:

1. Use Rope or Tape Lights Under Cabinets to Prevent Toe Stubbing

This hack is pretty straightforward – all you need is a rope light, or some handy adhesive tape lights. You can cut them to the perfect length to run along the bottom of the cabinets in your kitchen or bathroom close to the floor. Wire them to a switch, and then when you get up for a late night snack, or trip to the bathroom, you’ll never stub your toe again. (They also add a really attractive layer of light.)

PinExt New Home Project: Annies Desk Light Decision

As the newest employee at Pegasus Lighting, I figured it was high time for me to post about one of my own personal lighting projects! I recently moved into a new apartment, and got this gorgeous wooden desk for my home office:

I love it for all the storage, especially the nooks and shelving up top, but unfortunately they cast most of my workspace in shadow. NOT acceptable, especially for a devoted employee of Pegasus Lighting!

So, I weighed my options. I love the utility of standard base and clamp-on desk lamps to position and focus light, but I was dealing with so much shadow that I needed something more large-scale. Using an under cabinet light for widespread overhead lighting was the perfect choice for me. Continue reading »

PinExt Featured Lighting Project from Fort Mill, SC

An email from a customer on Wednesday made our week: “I’m really late in sending you a picture of my kitchen that Pegasus helped create. Every time I turn on the under cabinet lights,  I still get that great feeling from the first time. ” And what a beautiful kitchen it is:

PinExt Featured Lighting Project from Saint Louis, Missouri

There were custom designed cabinets, marble countertops, and a subway tile backsplash. Slim puck lights and under cabinet light fixtures completed this drop-dead gorgeous kitchen remodel in Missouri.

This customer used our Xenon Low Voltage Ultra-Slim Lights for in-cabinet puck lighting and our Xenon Line Voltage Thin Under Cabinet Task Lights to show off her marble countertops. What’s that? You want to see pictures? Oh, since you twisted my arm:

PinExt 3 Recreatable Lighting Looks From Houzz
If you haven’t checked out Houzz.com, you’re in for a treat. Houzz is a home design site with hundreds of thousands of interior and exterior photos, thousands of articles written by design experts, and several tools for managing the remodeling process. I am opted in to Houzz’s weekly newsletter, which delivers inspiration via ideabooks that will make you swoon.

Our product pages at Pegasus Lighting are easy to navigate, but they don’t always include tons of application photos. I find that sifting through Houzz’s ideabooks can spark new design ideas in an instant! Here are three photos from Houzz.com that are easily recreatable with Pegasus Lighting’s products.

1. The Multi-Layered Dining Room:

Isn’t it beautiful? This look is achieved by using four layers of lighting (five if you count the fireplace)! The cove lighting on the ceiling is done in a warm white color temperature. The designer likely used a customized lighting strip, probably something very similar to our xenon low voltage light strip. The four mini recessed lights add just a touch of general lighting – and the two in the center are swiveled to also illuminate the wall art. The in-cabinet lights call attention to the glass cabinets, and with the cove lighting, create excellent accent lighting for the room. Finally, the under cabinet lights provide countertop lighting in a warm color temperature, likely with a xenon under cabinet light fixture. Continue reading »

PinExt What You Can Learn About Lighting Design From Modern Family

Have you ever critiqued the interior design on your favorite TV show? It may sound strange, but it’s interesting to look past the characters and consider what you would have done differently (or similarly) with furniture placement, color schemes, and lighting design. I’ve definitely found myself thinking, “nice under cabinet lighting” a time or two while watching a show set in a luxury kitchen. Maybe that makes me a lighting nerd …

Modern Family is one of the most popular sitcoms on ABC right now, featuring three households that are impeccably designed. Phil and Claire Dunphy live in a traditional style family home with their three children, Jay Pritchett and wife Gloria live in a sleek, modern house with Gloria’s son Manny, and Mitchell and Cam’s home is a blend between the two styles. I included a few snapshots below, along with lighting design lessons:

1. Just a few recessed light fixtures can wash an entire wall with light. You can see just four recessed cans in this photo, but they create a wall washing effect so that the far wall becomes a focal point. I actually wrote a post recently on how wall washing recessed lighting  is often used in museums, hotels, and art galleries because it makes quite a statement. As you can see, it’s just as easy to incorporate into a home! The photo is of the Dunphy living room. Read more on how to wash a wall with light here.

PinExt Real DIY Lighting Projects: Adding a Basement Kitchen

These photos come from a serious DIY-er, so perhaps they’ll be an inspiration for anyone considering tackling a major renovation project on your own. Chad decided to build a kitchen in his basement, so he picked out cabinets and hardware and then installed all of the electrical, plumbing, and flooring with the help of his wife. He hired someone to help with the countertops and drywall work. “Some things should just be left to the pros,” Chad said. We agree!

PinExt Real Lighting Projects: A Kitchen Transformation

Get ready for some unbelievable before and after pictures.

Today’s post features a kitchen remodeling project from Rob’s Remodeling, Inc. After talking with Rob on the phone, I wished I lived closer to Northbrook, IL (where Rob’s Remodeling, Inc. is based) so I could hire him for any future remodeling projects I might have. He’s the nicest guy, and he’s clearly passionate about doing quality work. “I don’t do this for the money,” he told me. “I just love what I do.”

Rob says he uses Pegasus Lighting products whenever he can. His favorite under cabinet lighting fixture is the Xenon Triangle Light, and he is a perfectionist about making sure clients cannot see any wires once they’re installed. Best of all, he’s as big of a fan of under cabinet lighting as we are: “When I talk someone into doing under cabinet lighting,” he said, “it’s the difference between a good kitchen and a kickass kitchen.”

Without further ado, here are the pictures of a recent kitchen remodeling project Rob completed for a client. Continue reading »

PinExt 5 Killer Tips from ASSIST Recommends on Under Cabinet Lighting

couple choosing under cabinet lighting 5 Killer Tips from ASSIST Recommends on Under Cabinet LightingI recently came across a great resource from the Lighting Research Center (a university-based center for studying lighting technologies). It’s designed for homeowners, contractors, and builders exploring best practices for residential under cabinet lighting.

In other words, it’s a completely objective source to determine what kind of under cabinet light fixtures are right for you or your clients. Perfect!

The research is published in two PDF’s – A Homeowner’s Guide to Residential Under Cabinet Lighting and How To Select Residential LED Under-Cabinet Lighting – so read the complete guides if you can. However, if you’re pressed for time, start with these 5 killer tips I gleaned from the research.

Match the Color Temperature With Your Kitchen:

Do you envision a yellowish, neutral white, or cool white (with hints of blue) light for your under cabinet lighting? It’s a matter of personal preference. If you’re a fan of yellowish light, we usually recommend you aim for a color temperature below 3200K. The 2700-2800K range will be closest to the warm glow of an incandescent lamp. Neutral white light is around 3200-3500K and it becomes cool white at about 4100K. Continue reading »
