PinExt Tips From The White House For Lighting Your Home

With the debate tonight and Election Day a month away, I’m in a presidential state of mind. No matter who we choose to run the country for the next 4 years, he’s going to live in a stunning, immaculately lit home.

While much of the White House décor would overpower a regular-sized home, we can take away concepts from its lighting scheme to make our own dwellings more beautiful. Here are a few universal lighting principles carried out Washington-style:

Layer those lights! See: The China Room

While I was scrolling through photos on WhiteHouse.gov, I noted that every room had two, three, four different light sources. For instance, in the China Room created by First Lady Edith Wilson in 1917, there’s not only a beautiful chandelier for overhead lighting, but there are also wall sconces and even display lights in the china cabinets. This adds visual interest, eliminates unflattering shadows, and creates striking focal points.

Light layering is a flattering design strategy in any room in your house, but I chose The China Room so you could see how pretty it looks to have illuminated cabinets, hutches, shelves, and display cases. It might not be your first impulse to install a few linear or puck lights, but it’s really easy to do, and will make your cabinet’s contents and the entire room dazzle.

Know your color temperature. See: The State Dining Room

When we think of classic, traditional lighting, we often summon images of warm incandescent lights, as close to candle light as we can get. But, The State Dining Room shows us that cooler white light can be just as dignified. The daylight white light of the chandelier and sconces is unexpectedly cool, but it looks great! This color temperature is perfect to offset the clean white walls and crisp table cloths – a warmer light source may make things look too yellow.

You know the story. There’s a jewel robbery happening. After intense planning, the thief infiltrates the museum, probably through an air conditioning vent. When he drops down into the main room he’s still got to navigate the motion sensing security system, slinking under, over, and between beams of light. Perhaps he makes it through, and puts the biggest diamond you’ve ever seen in a shabby sack, ready to make the getaway. Suddenly, he slips, or drops the bag, and activates the sensor by a thread. Foiled! The bad guys get caught and the museum keeps their precious jewel.

While you may not have any multi-million dollar rocks in need of serious protection, motion sensor lights can help you in a ton of different ways. They’re convenient, safe, and will save energy.

Unlike the classic museum sensors that use light to detect motion, most motion sensor lights use PIR (passive infrared) or pyroelectric sensors. These systems detect rapid changes in infrared energy, and thus can turn on the lights when people, animals, or cars approach.

While having every light you own set on a motion sensor might not be a good idea (I foresee superfluous arm waving), select motion-controlled lights can be an invaluable addition to your home or office. Here are a few ways to use them:

  1. Motion sensor step light1 What’s the Commotion About Motion Sensors? Outdoor Lights: If you find yourself stumbling up the front steps with grocery bags after dark, installing a motion sensor spotlight or a few step lights could make the difference between getting inside safely and taking a dangerous spill. Putting flood lights on a sensor will also make navigating your yard and driveway more secure, helping you see and deterring any intruders.
  2. Night Lights: Opting for a motion detector night light will help you save energy – only turning the light on when you need it. If you wake up in the night for a snack or a trip to the bathroom, these lights are also one of the gentlest ways to help yourself see – you don’t get blasted with the full lumens of your overhead light source, and you don’t even have to think about flipping a switch. PinExt Using Dynamic Lighting Arrangements to Liven up Your Yard

Using Dynamic Lighting Arrangements to Liven up Your Yard

Today we have a guest post from Jillian Watkinson of Community Home Supply, a family-owned Chicago kitchen and bathroom showroom. Jillian’s post gives us some tips for improving the look of your home’s yard with strategically placed outdoor lighting.

Regardless of what your backyard looks like, how big it is or what landscape style it’s been built to, the addition of decorative dynamic lighting arrangements in strategic places is guaranteed to improve your yard’s look immensely. Placing lights around your property in certain patterns is not difficult or expensive and can turn even an ordinary yard into a nighttime wonder.

Take a look at the following tips and maybe use some of them to liven up your garden space with dynamic light arrangements.

What are Your Existing Yard Features?

As a first step towards setting out your lighting arrangements, take a good look at your front yard, back yard and any walkways you have to decide where lights could be placed for maximum effect. For example, if you have a walkway in your front yard and a large stone or wood patio in your back, you might want to think about surrounding their edges with small decorative lights in order to accent their presence and shape.

The idea here is to notice the features against which lighting would look best and make them stand out while muting other parts of your yard that would be better off more hidden in the dark. Continue reading »

PinExt “Light Therapy” Could Improve Alzheimer’s Patients’ Sleep Patterns

Did you know irregular light/dark patterns can disrupt your circadian rhythm? Not only that, a boggled circadian rhythm increases your risk of disease and reduces your quality of life. This is especially a problem for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD), because they spend more time indoors, exposed to lower light levels.

Irregular circadian patterns for individuals with Alzheimer’s or ADRD can become life-threatening if individuals leave their homes in the night and wander alone outside.

Light affects sleep patterns by acting on the retina (the part of the eye that’s sensitive to light) and syncing the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the body’s master clock, to its own light/dark pattern. When we get enough sunlight, we sync up with the 24-hour solar day. When we’re not exposed to regular daily patterns of light, our sleep patterns go bonkers. Continue reading »

PinExt Six Ways to Safeguard Your House from Burglaries Before a Vacation

thief entering home 300x199 Six Ways to Safeguard Your House from Burglaries Before a Vacation

From time to time we have guest bloggers help us out with great tips that we think our readers will find valuable. This is one of those times. This one comes from Todd Bently who works for Lifeshield, a home security company from my home state of NH. Big shout out to NH! After reading these great tips I was happy to see that I made the grade. What about you? Any other ways that you safeguard your house when you are away. Please share your tips in our comments below.

It’s that time of year again! Summer is here and families all over the world will be heading out on holiday. Vacation is supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation but many people worry about their home the entire time they’re away. Most homeowners are constantly asking themselves: “Did I lock all the doors and windows before we left?” or “Did we remember to set the alarm?” Homeowners who want to protect their homes from burglaries should follow these six suggestions:

1. Contact your neighbors

Let your neighbors know when you’re going out of town. If you can, give an extended family member a key to your home so they can check in from time to time. You might even consider letting someone stay in your home while you’re gone so you know it’s always guarded.

2. Install motion sensor lights

If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to set up motion sensor lights outside of your home. When anyone approaches, the lights will turn on. It’s a simple solution–burglars don’t want to be seen, so they will stay away from a home that’s well lit. Continue reading »

Night jogging 300x199 Lighting Your Way to Summer Fitness with LED Battery Operated Safety Lights

Monday was Memorial Day, and summer is now in full swing. People all over the country are turning off their lights and heading outdoors for some sunny fun. However, the heat of summer causes many of us to augment our daily exercise routines—we choose to work out before dawn or late at night to avoid the heat of the day.

While taking a walk, hike, jog, or bike ride in the great outdoors can be a refreshing start to your morning or liven up your evening, there are precautions you should take so that what you do to stay healthy doesn’t jeopardize your safety.

The most important thing to think about when exercising in the dark is being seen—and what better way to show up at night than with a light? Nowadays, there are many different lighting options for joggers, bikers, and outdoorsmen (and women!). Here are a few safety lights we love:

PinExt Put Lighting On Your Road Safety Checklist
LED fob1 300x210 Put Lighting On Your Road Safety Checklist

This glowing light will lead the way if you're walking to the car late at night. Plus, it makes finding keys in a bag a breeze!

It’s impossible to anticipate a breakdown or roadside emergency, which is why it’s important to always be prepared. Already equipped with a spare tire, first-aid kit, and jumper cables in the trunk? They might not be of much help if disaster strikes after dark, and you have no viable light source to illuminate the problem.

We recently added a few new products to the website designed for road safety. Our LED Road Flares will keep your stopped car very visible to other drivers: They can be seen from a mile away.

Our LED Trouble Light makes it easy to check under the hood, and it’s a handy tool to keep in your car. With 16 LEDs on the side of the thin wand, a flashlight-style spotlight on the tip, and an integrated laser pointer, it’s definitely a sophisticated flashlight.

Road safety is a serious issue. It’s the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 34. For more products that will keep you safer on the road in the event of an emergency, check out our battery operated lighting page.

PinExt Lighting Tips for the Elderly

senior citizens 300x199 Lighting Tips for the ElderlyWe are pleased to present this guest post from Daniel Frank, a blogger for Stannah Stairlifts, about the unique lighting needs for everyone as we age.

Lighting is vital for our health and well-being, and it becomes particularly important the older we get. As we age, two things happen to our eyes. The ability of our pupils to dilate decreases, which effectively makes them smaller, and our lenses become thicker. This means our retinas receive less light, and more of the light that gets through our pupils is absorbed or refracted before it gets to the retina, making an image softer.

This poses some serious safety risks as tripping hazards and other obstacles may not be as obvious as they would be to a younger person. The effects of glare on bright surfaces are also worsened as we get older, making detailed tasks such as drawing or sewing harder. However, there are some fairly simple lighting solutions to this “age old” problem. Continue reading »
