Wanted Outdoor Lighting1 5 Warning Signs Your (Lack Of) Outdoor Lighting Is An Accident Waiting To Happen1. When negotiating the steps to your door at night, you’re forced to use your cell phone as a makeshift flashlight.

There’s no question about it – inadequate step lighting is just dangerous. It’s so easy to incorporate lighting into your stairway! Don’t wait until you take a bad fall to make a change. Use this guide to determine what kind of lights are right for your steps.

2. When you’re out of town, so are the house lights.

Sure, outdoor lighting helps you negotiate dark stairways and makes your house look beautiful, but let’s be honest: It’s not just for you. It sends an important message to outsiders. When you leave home for an extended period of time, you don’t want every passerby to know it. The key here is to look for lights with photocells. Whether it’s a series of small utility lights or a light control socket you can screw your front porch lights into, photocells will enable automated lighting for your home. At dusk, the lights will turn on; at dawn, they’ll turn off again. Continue reading »

Walmart has been in the process of retrofitting parking lot lighting for years.  Their first full-scale test of using LED lighting in parking lots was back in 2008 at a store in Rogers, Arkansas.  Since then, they’ve been focusing on rolling out LED lighting in international markets (since those have the highest energy costs).

Here are before and after photos of an LED retrofit in a Guatemala City Walmart parking lot:

As you can see, LEDs offer visual benefits along with energy and maintenance savings. Since LEDs are highly directional, the light is better focused onto the parking lot ground, minimizing the effects of light pollution in the surrounding areas.

If you’ve never seen lights on a home synchronized to holiday music, this is quite an incredible display:

Star Ceiling Kit 224x300 Lighting Gift Ideas, Part 2

Recreate the night sky on a ceiling: The fiber optic star ceiling kit makes an incredible holiday gift.

Still searching for unique gift ideas for the holidays?  Here are a couple of more ideas to follow-up on our first post.  Unlike barbecue lights and LED mini lanterns, these ideas require some installation – although that can always be part of the gift!

The photo on the right is from one of our customers who installed the kit in his daughter’s nursery.  He even added in constellations to make it more realistic!  Once installed, the star ceiling is absolutely captivating, and it’s a unique gift for a bedroom, home theater room, bathroom, dining room, etc.

For deck stairs, indoor stairs, or to align the edges of a patio floor, the step light kit is a neat gift.  First of all, it has sound-to-light technology that will enable the color changes to synchronize with music playing.  Second, there are seven colors to set on flow mode (colors alternate at your choice of speed) or pause mode (step lights maintain the color of your choice).

gift ideas Great Gift Ideas in Lighting: Part 1

UPDATE 12/6: Our LED Mini Lanterns are now sold out, so I posted another idea to replace it.  Remember, as long as you order before Dec. 17th, your items will be shipped by Dec. 25th.

Once the turkey leftovers are stacked high in the fridge and the out-of-town relatives have all returned home, it’s officially time to start talking about gift giving season.  If you need to find unique ideas for anyone on your shopping list, look no further!  Today’s post is the first in a series of lighting gift ideas

  • The Barbecue Light:

Stereotypically, this would be categorized in the “gifts for men” idea list, but it really just depends on who’s usually in charge of the grilling (Read: who does a better job of not burning the steaks).  In all seriousness, barbecue lights make a great gift for anyone with an outdoor deck area for grilling.  They provide quality task lighting to gauge cooking times after dark, and they also add a nice feature to any deck area.

  • The LED Night Light:

Stick-anywhere, motion-activated, and weatherproof, you can’t go wrong with our LED Battery Operated Night Lights.  They are perfect for lighting a dark stairwell, a bathroom, bedroom, pantry, or even outdoor walkway.  Each order comes in a package of three, making great small gifts or stocking stuffers.

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!  More Great Gift Ideas are coming soon.

1. Under Cabinet Lighting:

Often cited as a top remodeling project in terms of high return on investment, installing under cabinet lights is always a great decision.  It provides task lighting to make cooking and cleaning easier and accent lighting to highlight a beautiful backsplash or countertop.  At night, the glow from an under cabinet light is particularly alluring.  Check out our post on How to Choose Under Cabinet Lighting.

2. Energy Efficient Lighting:

Everyone loves lowering their monthly energy bill.  Whether you’re switching out those old incandescent bulbs for CFLs, trying super-efficient LED cabinet lighting, or using fluorescent light fixtures for a closet or display case, energy efficiency is the way to go.  Besides, today’s incandescent bulbs will no longer be available for sale in the US by 2014 due to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.  Go green! holidaylighting2 The Perfect Holiday WreathWhen November rolls around each year, I think about front doors.

Maybe it’s strange, but I have so many memories from childhood of helping my mom with the holiday wreaths for the front door each year.  As soon as the weather turned cold, she would pull out an old twig wreath from the attic and we would add an assortment of leaves, gourds, flowers, and berries.  For days, we’d tweak the design until it was perfect.  And on the day after Thanksgiving, that fall wreath was transformed again with a red bow, pine cones, and a few sprigs from a fir tree.  At night, a spotlight shone on the front door to illuminate our perfect wreath, and the effect was spectacular.

I may be biased, but I think no front door is complete without a seasonal holiday wreath, especially one illuminated in all its brilliance at night.

I’ll leave the tips on how to craft the perfect holiday wreath to the experts.  But I do want to provide a tip for anyone out there hanging a wreath on their front door: Light it up!

The spotlight is really the easiest part of the wreath-hanging process.  You can use a yard stake to mount it in seconds.  You can even find one with a remote control so your toes don’t get cold from running outside to plug it in on a chilly November night.  Our LED remote controlled spotlight is on sale right now – have it shipped today so you’re ready for the season!

Homes are the most affordable they have been in 40 years.

In lighting news…

Starbucks is on a mission to become more eco-friendly – and despite exorbitant costs, they are forging ahead.  They plan to “green” all newly built and renovated company-owned stores this year and achieve LEED certification for sites across the world.

A light festival in Singapore is raising awareness for energy efficiency.  Running from October 15 to November 7, the event will feature LED light sculptures, performance-based displays, and other illuminated arts.  One of the featured artists, Warren Langley, said, “I believe it is important to show that spectacular lighting effects do not necessarily require vast amounts of electric power.”

This isn’t quite lighting “news,” but a travel article in USA Today discussed the trend in hotel lighting to go dark … perhaps too dark.  Reporter Barbara De Lollis discusses the pros and cons of staying in such a dimly-lit room, and readers weigh in on the comments.  It’s an interesting debate! Sold How to Make Your Home Seller Ready1. De-personalize

You want buyers to be able to picture themselves in their home, and that’s not going to happen if your family photos are prominently displayed in the living room.  Remove any personal items or unusual decorations.  It’s impossible to predict a potential buyer’s taste, so try to make your home neutral, yet inviting.

2. Create open space

Buyers don’t need to see every single room in the house filled with furniture.  Rent a storage space and reevaluate what you’re showing.  It’s best to leave a few functional pieces in each room and leave the rest for potential buyers to imagine.  Remove bookshelves, unnecessary chairs/couches, extra leaves in your dining room table, and out-of-season clothing in your closet.  Your home will seem larger and will be more likely to attract buyers.
