Fireworks 300x203 5 Ways Light Can Help With Your New Years Resolutions
Is it 2013 already? It’s hard to believe – it feels like just yesterday was January ’12 and we all were resolving to make our lives healthier, smarter, and easier. But, if last year’s resolutions didn’t work out as planned, and you’re feeling cynical about making any positive changes for 2013, maybe you just need to lighten up (literally).

Lighting is such an integral part of our everyday lives, affecting the way we see and navigate through the entire world, why couldn’t it help you achieve your New Year’s Resolution?

Below are 5 of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions, and lighting just might be the key to help you stay on track with each of them…

1. Save Money.

Dreading monthly bills, clipping coupons, and cutting back on every non-essential can get overwhelming. No wonder we feel like giving up mid-February. An easy way to passively save money each month is to switch out your old incandescent lights for energy-saving LED and fluorescent lights.

Did you know, roughly 20% of the world’s electricity consumption goes to lighting? If you swap all the light bulbs in your home for more efficient varieties, you’ll save an average of $400 a year! You can save even more money by installing motion sensors, timers, photocell, and other controls on your indoor and outdoor lights, to only use them when you need them. The best part: once installed, you hardly have to think about them at all.  Continue reading »

PinExt 4 Versatile Light Fixtures to Complement Your Style

The best home décor makes a statement about you. If you’re looking to revamp your home’s interior, you can adapt simple, statement light fixtures to fit your personal style. Let’s investigate how a few different kinds of lights can complement your favorite look.

Black Jointed Desk Lamp 300x300 4 Versatile Light Fixtures to Complement Your StyleJointed Desk Lamp

This classic light has been around for awhile, but its basic design makes it just as popular today as it was fifty years ago. Its simple yet bold design makes it just as versatile as it is fashionable. Here are several styles that work with this useful lamp:

  • Industrial homes feature exposed brick walls and building materials with few frills. A jointed lamp on a desk or table works perfectly in keeping with this deconstructed and boldly architectural style.
  • Contemporary homes with their striking colors and futuristic furnishings can also use a jointed desk lamp. Opting for one in a contrasting tone from your bedside or workspace table will agree with the sleek lines of your modern abode.
  • Minimalist dwellings can also incorporate jointed desk lamps, because they’re incredibly simple and clean looking. Try one in the same shade as the neutral colors of your other furnishings to achieve a monochromatic look.  Continue reading »

LightRecycle, a non-profit program to recycle lighting products in British Columbia, recently expanded to recycle all lighting products at no charge – the first program of its kind in Canada. The program began in 2010, and it caters to both commercial and residential clients.

Dan Watson, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, won this year’s James Dyson Award for his sustainable fishing net called SafetyNet. This special trawler fishing net uses strategically placed holes and LED lights to separate fish of different ages and species. These illuminated “exit signs” allow smaller non-marketable fish to escape.

PinExt What Lights and Bulldozers Have in Common

Kozzi view of city at night 441x294 300x199 What Lights and Bulldozers Have in Common
When we think of habitat destruction, the first things that come to mind are probably bulldozers in the rain forest and oil spills over tropical reefs. However, studies show light pollution may be destroying the habitats of animals in our own backyards.

Humans, animals, and plants all rely on the 24-hour cycle of light and dark, day and night, to regulate sleep, predation, migration, and mating behavior. When electric lights boggle those patterns, the whole ecosystem can get messed up.

Species Hurt By Unnatural Light Patterns

  • iStock 000013464095XSmall 194x300 What Lights and Bulldozers Have in CommonFireflies, which use distinctive flashing patterns to attract mates, have a more difficult time doing so around streetlights. Researchers have seen their populations decrease around areas with generous outdoor lighting.
  • Mayflies, which only have hours (maybe days) to reproduce, get distracted by electric lights and die before mating. This has reduced their population, along with those of their predators dramatically.
  • Migratory birds often fly at night to avoid predators and forage in the daylight. However, when they encounter a city’s skyglow, they can no longer use celestial cues to navigate, and may end up stuck and disoriented, circling the artificial light until they’re exhausted.
  • Nocturnal predators like owls, bats, raccoons, and coyotes lose the ability to hunt in the cover of night, and their prey cannot hide as easily.
  • Baby sea turtles, of course, are practically the spokesanimal for light pollution. Many of those little guys don’t make it into the ocean because they’re distracted by the lights on land. Continue reading »

LIFX Control 281x300 A New Kind of LED: Reinvented With Smartphones in Mind

Remember when clap-on, clap-off lights came out? It was the coolest thing to control the lights without leaving your seat. Well, what if you could control your lights to turn on and off, dim, change colors, and even respond to the beat of your iTunes library, all from the comfort of your favorite easy chair? That would take a lot of clapping.

Phil Bosua, creator of the LIFX smartbulb has decided to spare you the obligation (but not the desire) to thunderously applaud, allowing you to control his revolutionary lamp with your smartphone.

“It’s not like we get up to change the TV channel anymore,” said Bosua, “So why do that with our lights?”

The LIFX smartbulb is a self-contained LED light bulb, so all you need to do to utilize its numerous abilities is screw it into your light socket, and download the free app from iTunes or Google Play.

PinExt LEDs & Dimmers: From Star Crossed To Power Couple

First, there was Romeo and Juliet. Then, there was Jack and Rose. Now, there’s the LED and the dimmer, and unlike the tragic couples preceding them, these two actually have a happy ending…

LED + Dimmer LEDs & Dimmers: From Star Crossed To Power Couple

It all started not too long ago.

First there was the irresistible dimmer switch, ready to help people save some money on their energy bills and make houses look nice. It was a simpler, easier time – every incandescent and halogen light bulb in the land quickly succumbed to the dimmer’s charms, and life was pleasant.

Then, along came a beautiful, exotic, energy-saving LED light bulb, and our usually smooth, collected dimmer just couldn’t handle it. The dimmer and the LED tried to make it work together, but they drove each other crazy. Unlike the elementary filament lamps, the LED’s outlandish yet attractive electronic construction baffled the dimmer so it couldn’t function properly, and the dimmer’s ill-informed advances cause the LED only pain and suffering (aka malfunction).

Strange, destructive things began to happen. Sometimes the LED would turn off before the dimmer reached its lowest setting (a syndrome we now know as “drop-out”). Other times, the LED wouldn’t turn on until the dimmer’s slider moved up (a syndrome we now know as “pop-on”). If that wasn’t bad enough, the toxic relationship reached the point where the LED would flicker, change colors (usually from warm white to cool white), and just refuse to light up. The dimmer couldn’t protect the LED from possibly damaging current spikes, and the stress of the whole situation even reduced the LED’s rated life!

PinExt Dimmers: They’ll Change Your Life

Are you ready for a positive life change? (Or maybe just a bit of fun…) Check out our new video about the many advantages of dimmers:

Dimmers really can help you in ways you wouldn’t expect. Allow me to elaborate:

They’re Versatile:

By varying the lumen output of the lights in any room, you can immediately change the look and feel. It’s like having multiple rooms in one that you can enter with the simplest touch of a button. For instance, you can change your den from a lounge perfect for festive fraternization into a very official home theater.

They’re Tranquil:

Dimmers can create a peaceful environment to relax. Lowering the lights in your living room while you read, or for a nice long soak in the tub will keep you feeling very Zen. If harsh lights bother you in the morning, slowly brightening the lights is a gentle way to ease yourself into the new day.

They’re Romantic:

There really is no easier way to create ambiance at the drop of a hat. When you and your sweetie are feeling amorous, you can instantly transform any room into a romantic lovers’ retreat by simply turning down the lights. Try it for a date night – it’s a marvelous, imitate alternative to crowded, expensive restaurants. Continue reading »

PinExt How Lighting Can Easily Match the Ambiance of any Bathroom

bathroom lighting 325px How Lighting Can Easily Match the Ambiance of any Bathroom

Helen Davies of Better Bathrooms shares this guest post with us about ways to choose the right lighting for your bathroom. Thanks Helen!

The secret to creating the best ambiance for any room, including the bathroom, is simply having the correct type of lighting. It is a shame to build and decorate the bathroom of your dreams, only to have the feel of the room let down by the quality of the lighting. For example, a person may have gone for a modern inspired bathroom and ruined the decor with an aged ceiling lamp. With the vast majority of different lighting options available, it couldn’t be easier to find a light fixture to match the overall style of your bathroom.

If you have a small bathroom or en suite, lighting is the perfect way to maximize the space. A selection of ceiling spotlights can create the illusion of a larger space, taking away that cramped feeling and improving the overall feel of the room. The good thing about spotlights is that they can be installed into everything from the ceiling to the top of your bathroom cabinets. By installing the lights into shelves or bathroom cabinets you can create the illusion of extra space while showcasing any decorative items or products displayed on these units. Continue reading »

PinExt Fun Tool: How Much Energy Can You Save?
dimming tool Fun Tool: How Much Energy Can You Save?

Plug in the bulb type, hours used per day, wattage, and calculate your 5-year savings!

We are big fans of Lutron dimmers. The company – Lutron Electronics, Inc. – was founded over 50 years ago, so they have a lot of experience in the light control business. They are award-winning innovators. Plus, their products are just fantastic! The dimming controls are intuitive, the design is sleek, and the technology is sophisticated.

Not surprisingly, we sell a wide selection of Lutron dimmers.

I came across a fun tool this morning on Lutron’s website. It’s an Energy Saving Calculator allowing you to find out exactly how much electricity (and money) you can save in a particular room by adding a dimmer. You specify which dimmer you want to install, what type of light bulbs it will be used with, and how many hours per day you have the lights on.

Try it out for yourself! I plugged in the numbers for the light bulbs in my bathroom with a Maestro dimmer and found this:

Lutron Savings Calculator Fun Tool: How Much Energy Can You Save?

More than justifies the $35 cost of the Line Voltage Maestro Dimmer, doesn’t it?

Speaking of energy savings with dimmers, have you seen our infographic video about “A Greener Light?” If each U.S. household installed just one dimmer, we would save $230 million in electricity costs as a whole. Incredible!
