Have you ever seen a cove lighting installation in action?  Our xenon low voltage strip was featured on the DIY network TV show Rescue Renovation!  The episode features a young man who bought his first home from 1000 miles away.  Needless to say, it turned out to be quite a “fixer-upper.”

In this clip, you’ll see the Rescue Renovation team coming in to help.  They use the light strip behind crown molding to accentuate the home’s original cove ceiling.  View the video after the jump! Continue reading »

Researchers discovered LED desk lamps can broadcast wireless Internet

In lighting news…

German researchers discovered an application for LED lighting that may change the future at office desks everywhere.  They encoded a visual-spectrum signal in the LED undetectable to the human eye to broadcast high-speed wireless Internet – all from the desk lamp.

The US government is creating energy efficiency labels for homes.  They will quantify efficiency and provide measures similar to your car’s miles per gallon.  The purpose?  To motivate people to think more about their energy use.

Recipients of government stimulus funds marked to purchase energy-efficient lighting products for public buildings and roadways are no longer required to buy American products.  This comes as welcome news to states struggling to find affordable lighting products in the US.

The Importance of Bathroom LightingIt’s a small room with a big impact.  For homes, the main-floor half-bath, or powder room, is often one of the highest-traffic spaces in the house.  For businesses (especially restaurants), the bathroom can determine customer satisfaction, serving as the tipping point between a customer who won’t return and a customer who will recommend to others.  Businesses that consider bathroom design to be an expendable overhead cost may be making an expensive mistake.  A recent study by Cintas Corp. found that 95% of customers would not return to a restaurant if they had a bad experience with the restroom.  The study found that customers use these types of small details as indicators of how the business handles other back-end operations.

That being said, the guest bathroom for homes or businesses is a valuable space to remodel.  Because it’s so small, it’s also a less expensive project to take on.

ledshower1 LED Lighting as a Design TrendAn article in Electronic House last week discussed how interior designers and architects are incorporating LED lighting into homes for truly amazing visual effects.

Imagine controlling lights embedded in your bathtub to glow with the color of your choice.  Or picture an LED kitchen faucet that lights with a different color based on temperature, signaling when the water is too hot to touch.  The applications for the color and light control options that LEDs offer are endless, making them a hot design trend – especially because they are incredibly energy-efficient as well.  Even tile flooring can be illuminated with LED lighting from beneath.

Rope lighting is perfect for lining the top of a cove ceiling , and you can use either warm white or cool white LED rope light to create the desired effect.  Rob Q. used our Cool White LED Rope Lights for the cove around the top of his living room.  Check out the “after” photos:

CoveLightingLEDCoolWhiteRopeLight 2 Customer Lighting Project: Cool White LED Rope Lights
“Thanks for processing my order. I thought you might like to see how I used my previous order of LED rope lights. I built a cove light in my living room to conceal surround-sound speaker wires and placed the rope lights in the cove. They provide a beautiful, cool glow to our home and make the vaulted ceiling seem even higher. The indirect light is perfect for watching TV and one can even read by the light. I’m planning to add this new order above the kitchen cabinets and along the top of a beam which separates the living room and kitchen.”

DIMMING SYSTEMS

Today’s dimming systems enable you to do several positive things: lower light levels to conserve energy and increase lamp (light bulb) life, vary the mood of a room, and alter the intensity of the light to suit the activity.

FLUORESCENT LIGHTING IN THE HOME

Cool Light Source
Fluorescent lighting is, without question, the coolest of all of the light sources that are presently available and modern, high quality fluorescent lamps provide excellent lighting with very good color rendition.

T8 Electronic Ballasts
When selecting fluorescent fixtures for the home try to select those that have instant start T8 electronic ballasts. This will ensure that the fluorescent lamp will turn on without flickering, that the fixture will not give off much heat, that the ballast will not emit an annoying humming sound, and that the fixture will accommodate the new energy-efficient T8 fluorescent lamps.

T8 Lamps
When selecting fluorescent lamps for the home try to select T8 lamps with a color rendering index greater than 80 and a color temperature of 3000K or less. This lamp will provide very good color rendition and provide the kind of “warm” light that most people like in their homes.

LOW VOLTAGE HALOGEN LIGHTING

Value of Low Voltage Halogen Lighting
Low voltage halogen lighting offers a very white, crisp kind of light source that has excellent color rendering capabilities and often makes crystal and jewelry “sparkle”.

kitchen Lighting Tips for Residential KitchensGuiding Principle
“Light is the first element of design; without it there is no color, form, or texture.” – Thomas E. Farin

General
If the kitchen isn’t lit properly, who will notice it? Who will care to notice it? Who will even want to be in it?
Lighting can add depth and/or excitement to a kitchen. Let’s face it, the kitchen is where you and your family will spend a lot of time, so take the time to light it well so that it becomes an inviting and pleasant space to be in.
Bad lighting can be expensive and good lighting does not have to be expensive.

Accent Lighting
Accent lighting adds drama to a kitchen by creating visual interest. As part of the decorating scheme, accent lighting is used to spotlight paintings, house plants, sculpture, and other prized possessions, or to highlight drapery or the texture of a wall. House plants can be accented by aiming an uplight at the wall behind the plant, creating a dramatic silhouette of the plant against the wall.
