Wanted Outdoor Lighting1 5 Warning Signs Your (Lack Of) Outdoor Lighting Is An Accident Waiting To Happen1. When negotiating the steps to your door at night, you’re forced to use your cell phone as a makeshift flashlight.

There’s no question about it – inadequate step lighting is just dangerous. It’s so easy to incorporate lighting into your stairway! Don’t wait until you take a bad fall to make a change. Use this guide to determine what kind of lights are right for your steps.

2. When you’re out of town, so are the house lights.

Sure, outdoor lighting helps you negotiate dark stairways and makes your house look beautiful, but let’s be honest: It’s not just for you. It sends an important message to outsiders. When you leave home for an extended period of time, you don’t want every passerby to know it. The key here is to look for lights with photocells. Whether it’s a series of small utility lights or a light control socket you can screw your front porch lights into, photocells will enable automated lighting for your home. At dusk, the lights will turn on; at dawn, they’ll turn off again. Continue reading »

Stink Bugs Now in 33 US States How to Make a Stink Bug Trap Using Our LED Puck Light

Do you have a stink bug problem in your home?

Brown marmorated stink bugs originally came from Asia and were first spotted in Pennsylvania in the 1990s.  Since then, they’ve spread to 33 U.S. states.

If you’ve never encountered one, here are a few quick facts:

  • They do not bite or sting.
  • They will ruin your plants.  Researchers say they’re the most menacing agricultaral pests in 40 years.
  • They aren’t named “stink bugs” for nothing.  They emit a rather unpleasant odor.  If you have an infestation in your home, the smell can last for months.

We came across a video on YouTube showing how to make a stink bug trap using electrical tape, a Pepsi 2-liter bottle, masking tape, a razor, a black permanent marker, and our LED battery operated puck light.

The video says they are available at Home Depot, but it’s the exact same product we sell online.

See the video after the jump for instructions on how to make a homemade stink bug trap!

gift ideas Great Gift Ideas in Lighting: Part 1

UPDATE 12/6: Our LED Mini Lanterns are now sold out, so I posted another idea to replace it.  Remember, as long as you order before Dec. 17th, your items will be shipped by Dec. 25th.

Once the turkey leftovers are stacked high in the fridge and the out-of-town relatives have all returned home, it’s officially time to start talking about gift giving season.  If you need to find unique ideas for anyone on your shopping list, look no further!  Today’s post is the first in a series of lighting gift ideas

  • The Barbecue Light:

Stereotypically, this would be categorized in the “gifts for men” idea list, but it really just depends on who’s usually in charge of the grilling (Read: who does a better job of not burning the steaks).  In all seriousness, barbecue lights make a great gift for anyone with an outdoor deck area for grilling.  They provide quality task lighting to gauge cooking times after dark, and they also add a nice feature to any deck area.

  • The LED Night Light:

Stick-anywhere, motion-activated, and weatherproof, you can’t go wrong with our LED Battery Operated Night Lights.  They are perfect for lighting a dark stairwell, a bathroom, bedroom, pantry, or even outdoor walkway.  Each order comes in a package of three, making great small gifts or stocking stuffers.

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!  More Great Gift Ideas are coming soon.

holidaylighting2 The Perfect Holiday WreathWhen November rolls around each year, I think about front doors.

Maybe it’s strange, but I have so many memories from childhood of helping my mom with the holiday wreaths for the front door each year.  As soon as the weather turned cold, she would pull out an old twig wreath from the attic and we would add an assortment of leaves, gourds, flowers, and berries.  For days, we’d tweak the design until it was perfect.  And on the day after Thanksgiving, that fall wreath was transformed again with a red bow, pine cones, and a few sprigs from a fir tree.  At night, a spotlight shone on the front door to illuminate our perfect wreath, and the effect was spectacular.

I may be biased, but I think no front door is complete without a seasonal holiday wreath, especially one illuminated in all its brilliance at night.

I’ll leave the tips on how to craft the perfect holiday wreath to the experts.  But I do want to provide a tip for anyone out there hanging a wreath on their front door: Light it up!

The spotlight is really the easiest part of the wreath-hanging process.  You can use a yard stake to mount it in seconds.  You can even find one with a remote control so your toes don’t get cold from running outside to plug it in on a chilly November night.  Our LED remote controlled spotlight is on sale right now – have it shipped today so you’re ready for the season!

LED Battery Operated Night Light Choose the Right Night Light A Guide

The LED Battery Operated Night Light can be mounted anywhere with no wiring required.

Any well-designed home has a night light or two installed to provide a safe source of light for the bathroom, kitchen, hallway, or bedroom.  Even outdoor areas can benefit from a night light.  (Ever struggled to find your keys in a bag after coming home late at night?  A motion-sensor activated night light next to the door would fix that problem in an instant).

Night lights placed in the bedroom and bathroom also reduce the risk of falling for older adults.  In fact, doctors are recommending installing night lights in the home as part of a preventative measure.  Check out our blog post for more details.

We offer over 25 different models of night lights, so hopefully this guide will help you figure out which type is right for each room in your home.

The last thing you want to face when coming home late at night is stumbling over a flight of dark steps and fumbling blindly for the keys.  Outdoor lighting is really a matter of safety.  Of course, the glow of step lights does provide a nice aesthetic appeal, but the more important issue is whether you feel secure finding your way inside if it’s pitch black.

If your outdoor lighting is in dire need of an update, determine which step lights are right for you.

If you’re looking for an effortless install:

1251574583750200236Emergency exit sign.svg.thumb This Way to Safety?Chances are, you’ve never given much thought to the EXIT sign.  It’s a ubiquitous icon in America for “this way to safety”, hanging familiarly in every public building.  An article in Slate this month called question to the logic of the sign.  After all, the rest of the world uses an emergency sign that is opposite in every way.  Green instead of red, an image rather than text, the sign is an International Organization for Standardization symbol that most countries adopted years ago.  It was created in the 1970s by a Japanese designer and selected by the ISO in 1985.  Informally, it’s called “the running man.”

And doesn’t it make sense?  The fact that it’s a pictogram means it can be understood in any language.  The color green has historically represented safety, something to turn to when in danger.  Red, in contrast, is typically the universal sign for “stop”, “alert”, or “don’t touch.”
