PinExt How to Choose a Recessed Shower Light

Recessed Shower Light How to Choose a Recessed Shower Light When I say “bathroom lighting,” what image pops up in your head?

If it’s a beautiful vanity area accented with stylish wall sconces, or an illuminated mirror above the sink, you’re like most people. The vanity is important to light properly. It can be incredibly annoying to have inadequate light for makeup or shaving, so it’s typically what people (including us!) think of first.

This post is about the part of the bathroom that is frequently forgotten in terms of lighting: the shower. For some reason, recessed shower lights get left off the lighting plan often. The result is a shadowy, unwelcoming space – hardly the place you’d want to spend your first few groggy moments of the morning.

Whether you’re adding shower lights to your finished bathroom (an easy project with special remodel recessed housings), or choosing the shower trim you’d like to use in a new bathroom, this post should help you decide which product is right for you.

NKBATieredApproach300 The Latest Scoop: Kitchen & Bath Design Trends

This kitchen, designed by Tia Moras, illustrates the concept of tiered proportions.

The winning projects of the 2011 National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Design Competition were announced last month.

The award winners typically reflect common design themes.  This year, many of the projects used natural elements in design, strong colors, a variety of textures, and detailed ceilings to create a well-designed space.  Chocolate and espresso were popular hues for cabinetry.  Also, there seems to be a trend toward tiered proportions through overlapping heights in island surfaces, countertops, and cabinets (See photo to the right).

Read on for more photos of some of the design winners! Continue reading »

TIME Magazine published an article called “OLEDs: The Light Idea” about the incredible light-emitting diode that has the potential to “revolutionize the world’s $100 billion lighting industry.” OLEDs are extremely energy efficient, thin, and flexible – making them applicable for lighting designs the world has never seen before.  It’s a fascinating read.

The Department of Energy released a second fact sheet offering more information about the use of LED T8 replacement lamps in ceiling fixtures.  According to the DOE, LED T8 replacement lamps are not yet considered viable replacements for fluorescent T8s.

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has updated the LEED checklists they have available on their website, in response to complaints from many users.  The new checklists will hopefully better inform project managers about LEED documentation.

PinExt Pegasus Lighting Helps Build Hope on Elizabeth Street

Habitat for Humanity house in Durham NC Pegasus Lighting Helps Build Hope on Elizabeth StreetWe are excited to announce that our recent donation to Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA) is helping them complete their newest housing project in Durham, NC!

TROSA is a two-year, comprehensive residential substance abuse recovery program.  It is a non-profit organization, and provides all care, food, clothing, and housing to its 375 residents free of charge for the duration of the program.  Providing housing for 375 residents is certainly a challenge.  TROSA is currently undertaking a major expansion of its campus to fulfill needs.

We offered to provide recessed lighting for their project on Elizabeth Street in Durham, NC.  The house, which was originally built in the 1920’s, has been undergoing major renovations for the past two years.  After the refurbishments are finally complete, seventeen residents will live in the house.

We donated eighteen recessed shower trims and housings for the house’s four bathrooms, and the project is now expected to be complete within the next few weeks!

To find out more about the organization or to make a donation, visit the TROSA website.  To find out more about the Elizabeth Street project, check out our press release.

LED Battery Operated Night Light Choose the Right Night Light A Guide

The LED Battery Operated Night Light can be mounted anywhere with no wiring required.

Any well-designed home has a night light or two installed to provide a safe source of light for the bathroom, kitchen, hallway, or bedroom.  Even outdoor areas can benefit from a night light.  (Ever struggled to find your keys in a bag after coming home late at night?  A motion-sensor activated night light next to the door would fix that problem in an instant).

Night lights placed in the bedroom and bathroom also reduce the risk of falling for older adults.  In fact, doctors are recommending installing night lights in the home as part of a preventive measure.  Check out our blog post for more details.

We offer over 25 different models of night lights, so hopefully this guide will help you figure out which type is right for each room in your home.

In lighting news…

The buzz around GE’s new 17-year-life light bulbs is the expensive price tag ($40-50/bulb).  Industry leaders are hoping to reduce the cost of LEDs to push them into mainstream lighting.  Still, $40-50 doesn’t seem like such a big deal when it’s the only bulb you buy for a lamp in two decades.

One of our favorite Twitter follows and blogger Sarah Lloyd (@ClarityK) wrote about the dominance of LED lighting at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show this year.  This post includes great pictures of how LEDs are being incorporated into design.

The US government has offered a $10 million prize for the company offering the best energy-efficient alternative to the 60 Watt light bulb.  First in the line of contenders as of yet is Phillips.
