In lighting news…

TIME Magazine published an article called “OLEDs: The Light Idea” about the incredible light-emitting diode that has the potential to “revolutionize the world’s $100 billion lighting industry.” OLEDs are extremely energy efficient, thin, and flexible – making them applicable for lighting designs the world has never seen before.  It’s a fascinating read.

The Department of Energy released a second fact sheet offering more information about the use of LED T8 replacement lamps in ceiling fixtures.  According to the DOE, LED T8 replacement lamps are not yet considered viable replacements for fluorescent T8s.

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has updated the LEED checklists they have available on their website, in response to complaints from many users.  The new checklists will hopefully better inform project managers about LEED documentation.

Toshiba has signed a contract to provide LED lighting for the Louvre (free of charge).  The Pyramids, the Napoléon Court, and the Cour carrée will all be outfitted with LED lights by 2012.

Three women in southwestern Kenya have engineered solar lighting for two remote villages in rural Kenya.  The story is really incredible.

The Green Savings Network blog wrote about a current trend in the green construction industry: certified general electricians are transitioning into energy contractors because of the booming market for retrofitting.

Houston’s Toyta Center, home of the Houston Rockets (NBA), has just been awarded with LEED EB Certification.  Joining the ranks of Portland’s Rose Garden, Miami’s American Airlines Arena, Atlanta’s Philip’s Arena, and Minnesota’s Target Field, the news points to a surge in popularity of major sports arenas seeking LEED certification.     Continue reading »

The Country Living 2010 House of the Year, airlifted into Manhattan to demonstrate green living.

Ikea will start phasing out the sale of traditional incandescent bulbs starting August 1, and they plan to stop selling incandescent bulbs by the end of the year.  This announcement signals changes ahead in lighting design.

The top 10 hot kitchen and bath design trends for this year were published after the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2010 design competition.  Jill Valeri, president of The Welcome Home, said the way to inject your personality into your space is through paint color, hardware, and lighting.

The Butler Institute of American Art is installing LED lighting in its galleries to save energy and illuminate the paintings more effectively.  Because LEDs give off much less heat and do not emit UV rays, they better preserve artwork. Continue reading »

Journalist Tim Conneally wrote an informative, humorous take on LED technology in his article I left a light bulb on for one year straight, or: Why LED bulbs are about to change your life.  He discusses his experiment comparing LEDs with CFLs for a year and talks about the implications of Philip’s new LED “replacement bulb.”

MIT is investing millions in a ‘living lab’ initiative to cut electricity usage by 15 percent in the next three years.  About half of the reductions will come in the form of more efficient LED lighting systems.

John Bullough from the RPI Lighting Research Center in Troy wrote a great article on The Science Behind LED Technology. He explains the basics of LEDs and how they can be incorporated into homes.  Continue reading »

The buzz around GE’s new 17-year-life light bulbs is the expensive price tag ($40-50/bulb).  Industry leaders are hoping to reduce the cost of LEDs to push them into mainstream lighting.  Still, $40-50 doesn’t seem like such a big deal when it’s the only bulb you buy for a lamp in two decades.

One of our favorite Twitter follows and blogger Sarah Lloyd (@ClarityK) wrote about the dominance of LED lighting at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show this year.  This post includes great pictures of how LEDs are being incorporated into design.

The US government has offered a $10 million prize for the company offering the best energy-efficient alternative to the 60 Watt light bulb.  First in the line of contenders as of yet is Phillips.

In lighting news…

With Earth Day approaching in less than a month, this Department of Energy report could not have been more timely.  Here is the startling statistic: widespread adoption to LED lighting among Americans would save $120 billion.  It would also eliminate the need for 24 new large power plants, and would decrease carbon emissions significantly.

LEDs are also expected to come down in price significantly, so making that change to collectively save $120 billion will not have such high up-front costs.  Prices may drop from $30 to $10-20 because the production cost is expected to decrease.

Toshiba halted production of incandescent light bulbs on 3/17, marking a remarkable shift for the company to more energy-efficient products.  Toshiba will now focus on producing LEDs.

Researchers discovered LED desk lamps can broadcast wireless Internet

In lighting news…

German researchers discovered an application for LED lighting that may change the future at office desks everywhere.  They encoded a visual-spectrum signal in the LED undetectable to the human eye to broadcast high-speed wireless Internet – all from the desk lamp.

The US government is creating energy efficiency labels for homes.  They will quantify efficiency and provide measures similar to your car’s miles per gallon.  The purpose?  To motivate people to think more about their energy use.

Recipients of government stimulus funds marked to purchase energy-efficient lighting products for public buildings and roadways are no longer required to buy American products.  This comes as welcome news to states struggling to find affordable lighting products in the US.

In lighting news…

The television industry will soon experience “an acute undersupply” of LEDs.  Don’t expect a rapid decline in retail prices for LED-backlit LCD TVs anytime in the near future.

This post argues that hospital lighting changes must be included in health care reform legislation.  Consider this: every hospital that switches to LED lighting would save half a million dollars a year, with zero up front costs.
