In lighting news …

A team of scientists in Switzerland conducted an office lighting experiment proving that lighting conditions have a significant impact on cognitive performance. A group of volunteers took memory tests and alertness assessments after spending time in a room with natural lighting conditions, compared with artificial/low lighting conditions. The positive effects of natural lighting conditions lasted until early evening! Remember the study on classroom lighting in Germany, and the impact the Philips SchoolVision lighting system had? 

Meanwhile, researchers in North Carolina found that LED lighting can be used as an infection killer. They are developing methods to employ LEDs to sterilize surgical tools or purify water.

According to a recent Houzz survey, today’s homeowners are prioritizing aesthetics over value in remodeling projects. Find out what homeowners plan to spend on various projects and more key drivers for remodeling on Houzz.com.

If you’ve been a reader around here for some time, you may remember the old Pegasus Lighting Roundups. Long ago (in the beginning of 2010, if you really want to get specific), I wrote a post each week sharing the latest and greatest in lighting news, tips, and trends on the internet. We talked about things like LED wallpaperLance Armstrong’s kitchen, and an energy-efficient home that was airlifted into Manhattan, just to name a few.

Good news. Pegasus Lighting Roundups are back!

If this is your first time with one, here’s the deal: I design Roundups to put the spotlight on other sites across the web. There are too many great resources and cool articles out there not to share! Second, Roundups are meant to be quick reads. You’ll see snippets of info and I’ll include a link so that you can find out more if you’d like.

There’s an actual levitating lamp now on the lighting market. We’re not exaggerating. The shade floats in mid-air above the base via “integrating stabilized electromagnetic technology” by engineer Ger Jansen. LED has been the talk of the town lately.  Read about some of the latest technological advances here.  Also, check out this blog post from an attendee of the Green Building Conference in November: it discusses hype vs. reality on current LED lighting products on the market.  The LED lighting market is expected to triple over the next three years.

Green building is thriving, according to a new report by McGraw-Hill Construction.  Over the past two years, the market has grown 50%, even though total construction starts have shrunk 26% over the same time period.

Starbucks is on a mission to become more eco-friendly – and despite exorbitant costs, they are forging ahead.  They plan to “green” all newly built and renovated company-owned stores this year and achieve LEED certification for sites across the world.

A light festival in Singapore is raising awareness for energy efficiency.  Running from October 15 to November 7, the event will feature LED light sculptures, performance-based displays, and other illuminated arts.  One of the featured artists, Warren Langley, said, “I believe it is important to show that spectacular lighting effects do not necessarily require vast amounts of electric power.”

This isn’t quite lighting “news,” but a travel article in USA Today discussed the trend in hotel lighting to go dark … perhaps too dark.  Reporter Barbara De Lollis discusses the pros and cons of staying in such a dimly-lit room, and readers weigh in on the comments.  It’s an interesting debate! The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) gives out awards every year for particularly impressive projects.  The 2011 Call for Entries has been announced, and the site is now accepting submissions.  Don’t miss the final deadline on October 29!

The parent company of Chili’s Restaurants recently completed the largest roll-out of LED lighting in United States history.  125,000 lamps were installed in all 827 of its restaurants.  Annual savings will add up to a whopping $3.7 million.

The Empire State Building currently consumes the energy equivalence of 40,000 single-family homes.  That is all about to change: in the next three years, the famous building is aiming to become the most energy-efficient skyscraper in the world.

A New Zealand study reportedly dispelled myths about eco-friendly light bulbs.  In the study, consumers couldn’t tell the quality difference between eco-friendly bulbs and traditional light bulbs.

The Hearst Tower in New York recently became LEED Gold certified.  Why is this a big deal?  It’s the first occupied commercial building in NYC to achieve this rating, making it clear that retrofitting and remodeling existing buildings to green standards is very possible. Continue reading »
